Ready To Be Dad? 8 Things You Need When You Are About To Become A Dad

If you are about to become a father in a few months, then you need to know this. Nothing is as hard and as wonderful as fatherhood is. You will not only be parenting your child but also yourself in the journey.

It’s completely natural to feel that you are not ready for the imminent future that will consist of your child or children and your wife. Don’t ponder or even act on this feeling. But, you can make a stock of all the things before your baby arrives. In this way, you will feel a bit confident about what the future unravels.

Things You Will Need When You Are About to Become A Dad

Here, you will find all the necessary things that you will need when you are about to become a dad.

1. Decide where the baby will be sleeping

Sleep is one of the most essential things in a child’s life that holds paramount significance. Therefore, it is very important to decide where your baby will sleep before he or she arrives.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the parents need to decide and agree on where the child is sleeping. If they want to keep their baby in their room, they have to make sure that there is enough space for the crib. On the other hand, if they are planning to keep the baby in another room, they have to keep the nursery prepared. (This point is explained in detail later)

2. Make sure your nursery is all set before your baby arrives

If you and your partner are ruminating to prepare a nursery for your child in your house, then make sure that it is all ready and prepared before the delivery. You don’t want your baby to be sleeping in paint fumes and chemicals which generally emanate from new foam mattresses, window dressings, etc.

3. Prepare all the baby furniture

This might sound silly to you but it becomes easy to procrastinate amid all the hustle and bustle during the arrival of the baby. It eventually becomes their habit to delay all the little things which then cause huge repercussions in the end. Therefore, make sure that you build the crib that you decided you will before the arrival of the baby. Or, order that table which you thought of doing last night.

4. Divide the work between you and your partner

More often than not, many partners fall into the habit of browbeating the other just after the arrival of the baby. The primary reason which results in this disaster is resentment. Resentment, arising from the absence of division of labour where one feels executing more work than the other.

If you want to avoid this situation in the future, make sure that you divide the tasks accordingly before the baby arrives. For instance, if your partner is on night duty, then you try to finish as many household chores of the day as possible.

However, if you are a single dad, then a single dad needs money too. In fact, a single dad needs help more than a father who has a wife to help him around. Therefore, if you’re unable to compartmentalise your schedule of the day, make sure that you hire a trustworthy nanny for your kid who will take good care of your child.

If the works aren’t delegated properly, circumstances will often culminate into a disaster soon. When you divide the work between you and your partner, you both get an equal amount of time to spend with the baby and make as many memories as you want.

5. Have an infant car seat

Many don’t know this, but it is important to have an infant car seat at the hospital. A lot of hospitals follow this rule where they don’t allow parents to take their child unless there is a proper car seat. In addition to the car seat, you can also add a stuffed animal and some balloons, to welcome your baby into your house.

6. Stock up all the necessary clothing

One of the first things that you will need before the baby arrives is an exorbitant amount of clothing. You might receive some of it from your relatives during the baby shower and after the arrival of the baby but it will not be enough.

You have to go out to buy clothes, especially onesies. Onesies are one of the most comfortable apparel that will help your baby relax. Not only that, but it becomes easier to clean the baby shit and the mess they make while eating when they are wearing onesies.

Another thing that you have to stock up is socks. You might have lost two or more socks especially when you have a busy life. Well, put your seat belt on because you will have a busier life if not the busiest. Baby socks, because they are tiny, will get lost too many times to keep a count. Therefore, make sure there is a huge stock of baby socks at least for a few months in the beginning.

Lastly, keep in mind in which season your baby is born and accordingly, stock up on clothes.

7. Be prepared for all the baby-care essentials

Diapers, diaper rash creams, wipes, onesies, soaps, lotions, burpees, etc. are some of the most essential baby care essentials. Make sure that you have collected at least a month’s worth of essentials so that you don’t have to rush to the nearest drug store for the smallest or the most basic needs of your child.

8. Agree on which diapers system works best for you and your partner

For those who don’t know, there are mainly two types of diaper systems; a disposable diaper system and a cloth system. You cannot switch between the two incessantly after your child has arrived. This can prove harmful to the health of your baby.

Therefore, before the baby’s arrival, make sure that you decide which system works for you and your partner. You can do a cost/ benefit analysis on every system and check which is the best one.

These are some of the basic things that you need when you are about to become a dad.  Make sure that you pay special attention to these, because more often than not, children have been heard complaining things like, ‘my dad needs mental help’, or ‘my dad needs a massage chair but we can’t afford it’, etc. These are certain situations that you won’t like your family to see. Therefore, make sure that you plan out your life and secure yourself as well as your family.

It will be a hard journey but at the same time, you will be filled with joy even after all the hustle when you hold your baby in your arms for the first time.
